McGarrett’s visage again ends Season Finale -Courtesy AOLRocks.com

(Click “Play” above to hear podcast)

This week my Hawaiian sister @WendieJoy and I talk about the season 2 finale of Hawaii Five-0 and do a bit of a wrap-up on the past season.

The Season 2 finale is entitled, “Ua Hala” (Death in the Family) and Wendie breaks down the title’s meaning in Hawaiian.

Other points we cover include:

-Was this Season’s ender- worth the hype and the wait?

-Good points- what we liked:)-

-Performances of  the 4 main characters- what was awesome, who stood out.

-Constructive Criticism about the episode.  Was it a copy-cat of last season? What’s up with other CBS season enders: Criminal Minds, NCIS and NCIS: LA etc. all having very large explosion filled episodes too!

-Reaction to Shelburne? Did we know, do we buy it, why would MOM stay away for so long?

-What we think will happen with these story lines in Season 3

-The addition of “Cath”, Steve’s navy love-interest, (played by Michelle Borth) to the cast next year.

-Our plans for the summer!

Thanks for tuning in to our little Podcast!  Let us know what you think by leaving comments on the blog! Don’t forget to check in with @WendieJoy for new posts to her Five-0 Redux blog all summer at the Honolulu Star Advertisiser’s Pulse Website.

ALOHA!

ALOHA and Welcome back to WebSouffle’s Hawaii Five-0 podcast, where we focus on discussing the CBS reboot of ‘Hawaii Five-0, set in beautiful Hawaii.

This week my Hawaiian sister, @WendieJoy and I talk about the latest new episode of Hawaii Five-0, the 18th of Season 2. Entitled, “Lekio” or “Radio” as it’s translated by CBS,  it features special guest stars, Dennis Miller and James Caan, father of Scott Caan who plays Det. Danny Williams.

This week’s topics include:

-Wendie’s always fascinating breakdown of the title of the episode and how it’s more of an adaptation of an English word than a Hawaiian derivation,

-Dennis Miller, the actor – comedian and radio star, the acerbic ranting wit who as Officer808 puts it in his Five-0 Undercover Blog,  gets the ‘Rick Springfield treatment’ in an early and explosive send-off.” Make sure to catch the his funny article, “What We Learned about Hawaii from Hawaii Five-0, Episode 218, “Lekiō” at his blog.

-Cops and why we don’t envy them as parents (ie: Danny and Grace’s heart-to-heart about boys being evil) We also discuss the concept of “artistic license” and how they really don’t make enough to live at the Hilton Hawaiian Resort in Oahu!

-Danno’s shirtlessness (sorry, we HAD to go there!)

-Max’s freak-out after the kidnapping of the dead radio star’s body

-Caan “Squared” The fabulous James Caan appears on the show alongside McGarrett and Danny (his son, Scott Caan) with a performance that is a real Tour De Force. The banter, the laughs, and the nicknames are priceless! Not to mention the addition to the Carguement scenes! (For more about James Caan’s time on the set, see an excellent article written by one of Wendie’s colleagues at the Honolulu Star Advertiser,  reporter Mike Gordon (aka @CrankyDad).

-Wendie elaborates on her Five-0 Redux Blog Post entitled, “Father Figure” and how this was the theme that permeated the episode. Perhaps the Hawaiian word for Father Figure should have been the real title of the episode!

-The lovely end scene filled with Tony Archer offering marriage counseling to McDanno, #cutedannotoes and NY style Pizza that you gotta fold to eat right.

and finally….

WEBSouffle and Wendie do talk about what we term ‘The Elephant In The Room’

-the latest news about Alex 0’Loughlin needing to take a little time off to get his health in order and how much love and support we and his fans all over the internet are sending his way.

For more on that I direct people to my friend Mizzoh’s great website AlexOLoughlinRocks.com to find a good article describing the situation.

“Hawaii Five-0” goes on a short hiatus for the next two weeks, with repeats of two of the more popular episodes from season two. “Mea Makamae” airs March 5, followed by “Ma‘ema‘e” on March 12. You can read Wendie’s reviews of these episodes at her blog, ‘The Five 0 Redux‘ at the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s Pulse Website, linked above.

And the next new episode 2.19, named Ka lele  (“Faith” or “Support”)
will feature Ed Asner reprising a role he played from the original Hawaii Five-0 where Jack Lord’s McGarret (in this case, Steve’s father, Jack) put him in jail and now he is to be released. It will also star Taryn Manning as Steve’s sister, MaryAnn.

Finally, 5-0 fans and listeners, don’t forget to catch WendieJoy’s  Five-0 Redux blog on the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s Pulse website. Its a great way to get your Hawaii Five-0 reviewed with a side order of Hawaiian culture!

“Show#23 of Websouffle’s Hawaii Five-0 Podcast Review – “Ua Lawe-Wale” S2E2 with Jools of “The Five-0’s”

Here is the latest ‘Hawaii Five-0’ Podcast review of Season 2, Episode 2, airing September 26th and entitled, “Ua Lawe Wale” or ‘Taken’. Jools of The Five-0’s talked with me this week about our reaction to the much “calmer” follow-up to the premiere episode of the 2nd season of the show.

We discuss our impressions of the new girl on the team, Lori Weston, fashion changes we’ve noticed, the show traveling to Lanai, whether Kono is being left in the dust by the team, the McDanno “horseguement”and of course our “Theme” discussion of how the title of the episode ties into all the characters and the crime story of the week.

Please join me next week for our discussion of the 3rd episode, entitled, “Kame’e”. Thank you for listening and commenting.

Aloha!

Show#22 ‘Hawaii in Vermont’ Podcast review – Further discussion of “Ha ‘i’ ole” S2E1 with @WendieJoy 9/22/11

Blogger, Writer, Reporter @WendieJoy Burbridge (picture courtesy of The Honolulu Star Advertiser)

@WendieJoy Burbridge is an Oahu native, a great friend of our “Hawaii In Vermont” Podcast (a dear friend of mine, too!) and of course is the author of the The Five-0 Redux Blog on the “Honolulu Star Advertiser.”

Fortunately, this busy lady had some rare free time this week on her long commute home from her day job as a teacher and you can be darn sure I took advantage!  Thanks to technology, we were able to Skype between her car and my computer in Vermont and have an even more in depth conversation than my “initial reaction podcast”  (Show #21) about the new episode of the 2nd season.

I really wanted to get Wendie’s perspective on “Ha ‘i’ ole” because of her two unique points of view.

One point of view we talk about was what it was like for her to have already seen this episode over 2 weeks before it’s Network Premiere at ‘Sunset At The Beach’ in Waikiki on a big screen. I asked Wendie to compare seeing it there to seeing it at home on a tv or computer screen.

The other aspect I was curious about of course, was how being an islander affected her perspective and/or enjoyment of the episode. This was was quite interesting and we learn more about the title “Ha ‘i’ ole” and it’s meaning from Wendie who also wrote about it in her pre-episode post on her The Five-0 Redux blog. We also learn some interesting trivia about the opening cemetery scene and the beautiful singing by the Honolulu boys choir.

We talk about fugitive Steve McGarrett’s Halawa Jail breakout and his appearance. (Apparently it’s not that unusual because breakouts from prison have happened before!) In addition, we also have fun discussing the new character, Max and how all the banter and bromance between Steve and Dannyhappily seems intact. There is the usual probing of the themes and characters of the show which we always include as a part of our discussion. We also give our opinions of the plot and the crazy twist at the end.

Finally, we talk about some of the extras on the just released  DVD of the first season of the show and some of the deleted scenes we have seen and which we wished had been a part of the original episodes they belonged to.

Wendie’s only regret is having met Mark Dacascos (Wo Fat) on the Red Carpet  a few weeks ago, and having to hate his character on the show, even though he was such a nice guy in real life. Oh, well, she will just have to accept having love/hate relationship with him!

Tune in for our next “Hawaii In Vermont” H50 podcast review sometime after next week’s all new 2nd episode of the new season,  “Ua Lawe Wale (Taken.) The official press release for the episode from CBS says:

GOVERNOR DENNING ASSIGNS A NEW MEMBER TO FIVE-0’S TASK FORCE, AND THE HEAT IS ON FOR KONO, ON “HAWAII FIVE-0,” MONDAY, SEPT. 26

Gov. Denning assigns Officer Lori Weston to Five-0 to make sure McGarrett and team follow the new rules set by him and also apply her excellent profiling skills to the task force.  Meanwhile, as Five-0 investigates the kidnapping of a teenage paddleboard champion, Internal Affairs Capt. Vince Fryer continues his interrogation of Kono, on HAWAII FIVE-0, Monday, Sept. 26

Thanks for listening! Talk to you soon, ALOHA!

1st podcast review of Season 2 of Hawaii Five-0 “Initial Reaction” of Episode 2.01 “Ha’i’ole”

Alex O'Loughlin as Steve McGarrett may be a prisoner in Halawa Prison but he takes none too in S2E1 "Ha'i'ole (screencap courtesy of AlexOLoughlinRocks.com)

So it finally happened!  The Season 2 Premiere came and boy was it good!

Well that’s what Jools of The Five 0’s and I think of it and what we talk about in my first “Initial Reaction” #H50 Podcast Review of Season 2, Episode #1 entitled “Ha’i’ole.

I usually wait to let the episodes percolate in my brain a bit and process things and then I look for quotes and locations and trivia but …..I just couldn’t wait!!!! How could I ?

I along with most of you out there, have been waiting 3 months and even longer than some who were lucky enough to see the episode over 10 days ago in Hawaii at Sunset On The Beach in Waikiki. I had plenty of chances for those spoilers and tidbits and behind-the-scene videos to take a peak… but I did avoid almost all of them! Just a few pictures here and there, but I really wanted to enjoy the first episode!

So as quick as Kamekona starting a new business, I sat down this afternoon (evening for her) with Jools and we just chatted and laughed about this fantastic episode and recounted our first reactions.  Jools had some great talking points. They are:

–      Hesse changing sides

–      How badass McG was

–      Max aka Kermit! That character is really funny

–      Danno’s ex baby.

–      The new Gov

–      How Chin Ho always had McG’s back

–      Lt. Cmdr. Joe White – loved how mellow he is

–      What Makoto told McG

–      If McG Senior is involved or was pretending to be mates with Wo Fat

–      How Wo Fat will resort to anything to protect himself. Very happy to see more of him finally!!!

–      And the freaking ending!!!!!

It’s not too, too long (only 45 minutes this time, Yay!)  and there’s no locations or trivia about stars, (well not too much) and just us gals rambling on about it. I hope you enjoy it and make sure to check out Jool’s newly launched website at http://www.thefive0s.org/  You might also like to take part in the Tweet up about the episodes which take place o Wednesday’s at 8pm EST which you can do at http://thefive0s.posterous.com/pages/h50tinis .

Don’t worry, I do plan on eventually posting locations and trivia for the episode soon, so keep an eye on this website and my Facebook page. I also hope to get a discussion later this week from my Hawaiian sis, @WendieJoy Burbridge of the Five-0 Redux blog to weigh in and discuss her favorite moments, so make sure to tune in again soon.

Aloha from Vermont!

Wendie Burbridge interviews Masi Oka at SOTB2 in Waikiki on the Red Carpet

As promised in our last post, the “Hawaii In Vermont” #H50 Podcast has indeed managed to snag a nice little interview with talented Hawaiian Blogger, writer, and teacher  and now reporter, WendieJoy Burbridge!

Wendie, as our listeners know, is a great friend of the show, and writes the “Five-0 Redux” Blog. Hers is one of the few blog reviews of the show with a distinctly Hawaiian point of view, since she lives and works on the island of Oahu!

Today, one day before the Network TV Premiere of the 2nd season of  Hawaii Five-0, Wendie gave us a bit of her Sunday. She told us that the excitement of last week’s 2nd season World Premiere Red Carpet event at Sunset On The Beach keeps on coming and she hasn’t even had time to process it all.

Even this weekend, when we caught up with her she was driving to meet some Five-0 fans who came a long way to celebrate the network premiere tomorrow night and who she was going to Sunday brunch with in Waikiki.

So even though we were unable to Skype with her, we were able to get some audio through an iPhone and I felt it was decent enough to share with our fans!

Our podcast mainly covers her experience being on the Red Carpet for the World Premiere and representing the “Honolulu Star Advertiser” as a reporter there.

Wendie discusses her schedule for that day, how she prepared for her reporting gig and who her favorite interviews were with. She also tells us how she managed to interview stars like Alex O’loughlin and not faint!

In addition, we get a quick lowdown on what’s in store for the rest of us when we finally get to see the 1st episode of the new season, Monday, September 19th and how amazing it will be. Wendie’s husband, Chief, also gives us his perspective as a spectator on the beach that night!

So sit back and relax as we offer up this little appetizer as a precursor to tomorrow night’s premiere episode of ‘Hawaii Five-0’ entitled “Ha’i’ole.”

Make sure to stay tuned here and our facebook.com/alohavermont page for details about when our initial reaction podcast will be posted soon after the 1st episode of season 2 premieres!

Aloha!

Video of Honolulu Star Advertiser Interviews by Reporters, Wendie Burbridge and Mike Gordon (Courtesy of Honolulu Star Advertiser)

The 6th episode in our Summer Hawaii Five-0 blogger series is with Mizzoh, who I had the pleasure of  Skyping with from Europe, this time from Holland. She is the talented webmistress & author of  the very extensive and informative blog, “Alex O’Loughlin Rocks!”, the web’s most comprehensive and up to date Alex O’Loughlin site. I myself consider it one of the most thorough blogs about Hawaii Five-0 even though the focus is on Alex. Mizzoh also just launched an all-video page for the website which you can directly link to at http://alexoloughlinvideos.com/.

Mizzoh and I talked not only about what you can find on her site and it’s origin, but of course we talked about Alex O’Loughlin’s career and what led up to his role in Hawaii Five-o. We discussed his acting training,  different acting gigs and what he’s done with the character of Steve McGarrett. Mizzoh was extremely well-spoken and wonderful to interview.

When the new season starts back, you must definitely not miss her weekly AOLR Wrap Ups, for everything that happened in Hawaii Five-O and Alex news, as well as her summarized listings of the best of the recaps. She has done the hard work for you in finding the best of those to read! You can also find Mizzoh at her email mizzoh@alexoloughlinrocks.com and on twitter at @AOLRocks as well!

I hope you will enjoy listening to her here and discovering her fantastic website  AlexO’LoughlinRocks.com !!!

Mahalo as always for listening and Aloha until next time!

Correction: I incorrectly stated in the podcast introduction that this was Summer Interview Series episode # 5, but it is actually # 6. The Hawaii In Vermont Podcast Summer Interview Series #5 was the one I did with actor Will Yun Lee, who plays “Sang Min” on Hawaii Five-0.

Will Yun Lee in "Elektra"

Will Yun Lee as 'Sang Min' Ua Hiki Mai Kapalena Pau

‘Hawaii In Vermont’, the Hawaii Five-0 Podcast, continues its Summer Interview Series with Episode#5 and is delighted to be able to present an interview with our first actor from the show, Will Yun Lee!

As fans know, the just-turned 40 year old actor, plays the rascally ‘Sang Min’, a sometime human trafficker and accomplice of Steve’s nemesis, Victor Hesse.

Before Hawaii Five-0, Will was known for his roles on the supernatural tv series, Witchblade, a role on the sci fi tv show Bionic Woman, and  Colonel Tan-Sun Moon , the villain in the James Bond film Die Another Day which I felt was a brilliant portrayal.

Fans have reacted to his Hawaii Five-0 appearances with clamors for “more Sang Min!” This is most likely due to the way Will has been able to imbue the character with such interesting nuance. Sang Min is a crazy over-the-top criminal businessman with a sympathetic side. In the 4 episodes he has appeared in from the 1st season (Pilot, Manaʻo, Hana ʻaʻa Makehewa & Ua Hiki Mai Kapalena Pau,) he has had some extremely lively, snarky and sometimes quite serious scenes with Five-0 Team members.

Will was an extremely gracious interviewee! He took the time to answer everything in a thoughtful way.  One of the most interesting parts of the interview is when he talks about how he got the role and what went into originating it.

Other things we talk about in the interview:

  • His start in Acting
  • First roles
  • His Experience on the Bond Film, “Die Another Day”  (Yes, I asked him if he met Madonna!)
  • Playing villians
  • Roles for Asian-Americans
  • His Martial Arts background (His father was A Taekwondo grandmaster in the US and he himself was on the Berkeley University, Cal Taekwondo team for four years)
  • His experience on the Hawaii Five-0 Set and what he did to prepare for the part
  • Does he think he’ll be back for the 2nd season?
  • And many more!

Future projects for Will include taking the lead in the Wych ‘Kaos’ Kaosayananda-directed drama “Bangkok Love Story”, starring opposite Camilla Belle as “a retired Muay Thai fighter-turned-monk who returns to the world he left behind many years ago.”

It’s also been reported in Variety that he has been added to his friend, Len Wiseman’s “Total Recall” reboot (the original starred, Arnold Schwarzenegger) and to the cast of futuristic freedom fighters in the movie. Variety says he will be taking the role of ‘Marek’, a close friend and co-worker of Colin Farrell’s protagonist.

The film that Will just completed shooting in Toronto, and mentioned in the Podcast,  is “Cobu 3D,” which stars Derek Hough and international pop icon Kwon Boa. The story concerns a pair of star-crossed dancers (like in “Step Up”) who find themselves at the center of a bitter rivalry between their brothers’ underground dance clubs in New York. Lee will play an upscale nightclub owner who feuds with his former business partner. It’s a twist to the ‘Romeo & Juliet’ story. The film is produced by CJ Entertainment, the largest production co. in Korea.

I must not forget to give a big mahalo to a sister Hawaii Five-0 fan and podcaster, Amy Bakari,  who made it possible for me to arrange this interview with Will!

If you would like to hear more from Will, Amy had the first interview with him since he took on the role of ‘Sang Min’  She had him as a guest on her “In My Pajamas” show on Internet Blog Radio.  You can listen to that interview here.

You can look forward to more interviews from Amy and I soon! In fact we are slated to interview Executive Producer, Peter Lenkov, next week! Stay tune here and to Amy’s and my twitter feeds for more details!

Mahalo to all my kind listeners and blog readers! See you soon!  Aloooooha!
